Be an ARA ALSTAR!

As a dedicated member of our awesome movement of river defenders and water protectors, we’re thrilled to invite you to an exciting new opportunity! You have the chance to be part of the inaugural class of ALSTARs — Alabama’s Special Trained Advocates for Rivers — where you’ll help lead the charge in protecting our rivers and ensuring clean water for all.

A major component of our strategic plan over the next few years is to continue building relationships with our legislators and decision-makers, and to help inform them about the importance of the waterways in their districts.  

This is where you can help! 

ALSTAR is a new six-month informal training program for ARA members and friends who are interested in learning more about legislative advocacy and building long-term relationships with their elected officials. We are building this team to be our “go to” advocates when we need to communicate with legislators about important matters related to river protection, clean water advocacy, and other important environmental issues.  

The training is easy! It will be 2-3 virtual training sessions, led by ARA staff and includes some cool activities, such as meeting with ARA staff and your legislator, sending a letter or an email to your legislators following up on our meeting, and contacting your legislator during the session to support or oppose legislation that ARA is working on.  

Participants will not only become mini-lobbyists, but they will also earn a super coveted certificate of completion and may also receive a small stipend to participate if needed. They will also present their experience at Alabama Water Rally 2025 and encourage others to participate in future ALSTAR trainings.
