It's a super special day at Alabama Rivers Alliance! Today we are celebrating an awesome milestone: Cindy Lowry’s 20th anniversary at ARA!

That’s 20 years of steadfast dedication, unwavering passion, thoughtful collaboration, and visionary leadership. Cindy’s commitment to protecting and defending all of Alabama’s 132,000 miles of rivers and streams is unmatched. Her keen ability to lead with kindness, true collaboration, and an unassuming brilliance has inspired all of us who work with her.

A true visionary, Cindy has shaped Alabama’s river protection movement into a powerful and united force for good. You may need to lean in to hear her, but her words hold the kind of wisdom that can move mountains and inspire change.

Thank you, Cindy, for 20 years of thoughtful, impactful leadership and for inspiring us every day to work toward an Alabama with free-flowing, healthy rivers that support thriving critters and healthy communities.

Friends in Chattanooga! See "Saving Seagrass" at the Lookout Wild Film Festival this Sunday! We're stoked to share this film with such a great audience of protectors of our wild spaces and rivers and streams!

In "Saving Seagrass: Alabama’s Critical Underwater Nursery", we dive underwater to discover a “whole ‘nother living world under there in the seagrass that nobody ever sees”, full of critters and life and we learn what must happen to protect this Submerged Aquatic Vegetation vital to the health of Mobile Bay and the communities and industries that rely on it. Directed by Robert Boyd as part of Southern Exposure Films 2024

Over the past year, Alabama Rivers Alliance, along

Over the past year, Alabama Rivers Alliance, along with regional and national partners at Environmental Policy Innovation Center (EPIC) and @harpethriver, has been investigating efforts to get lead OUT of our drinking water in the Southeast. This resulted in a comprehensive report that has good news for #Alabama -- we're ahead of many other states when it comes to removing toxic lead from our drinking water systems!

Unfortunately, a resolution was introduced in Congress today by Representative Gary Palmer to do away with a law that requires utilities to get lead out of drinking water by 2027. Repealing the Lead & Copper Rule Improvements would halt the replacement lead pipes across the country, meaning that millions of Americans and more than 100,000 Alabamians will continue to be exposed to toxic lead in their drinking water.

We have had a great year defending rivers and collaborating with our alliance and members all across Alabama! You've been a HUGE part of that success for us and we are so thankful to have your support!

The Alabama Rivers Alliance has been building, supporting and leading an Alliance of community and watershed-based organizations across Alabama for nearly thirty years. Today, our Alliance stands strong with more than 100 partner organizations!

But believe or not, there are still areas of the state where we need more partners at the community and watershed level to be the eyes and ears for our waterways and help support the Alliance be robust enough to protect ALL of Alabama’s 132,000 miles of rivers or streams.

That is why our staff has been strategically focusing efforts in areas where we can grow our movement and build capacity for small, all volunteer efforts in underrepresented areas of the state. Check out our exciting successes in just three major urban areas of the state, and please consider an end of the year donation in support of this movement and our strategic work across the state!

Fantastic conversation with Representative Bob Fin

Fantastic conversation with Representative Bob Fincher, Senator Randy Price, local government officials and the community of Randolph County last night in Wedowee! Alabama Rivers Alliance partnered with Representative Bob Fincher (R 37) to host a Town Hall discussing rivers and streams in the Tallapoosa watershed and to hear concerns about threats to waterways in the area from local landowners.

We also shared the history of the Alabama Water Plan and advocated to revive the Permanent Joint Legislative Committee on Water Policy and Management. We are super excited looking toward 2025 and all the ways we can #DefendRivers with our elected officials across the state!
