#DefendRivers with the Alabama Rivers Alliance on July 9!

The #DefendRivers paddle and campaign engages people across Alabama in raising awareness of water issues and communicating their significance to state elected officials and those seeking to become elected officials. This year, the paddle will be held on Saturday, July 9. This annual event provides an opportunity for citizens to *float* their message directly to Alabama’s policy makers and elected officials.

This year, as part of our ongoing work towards an Alabama Water Management Plan, our message will be to Let Rivers Flow for all of our state’s rivers.

The health and integrity of our river systems depends on flow protections. Flow is the most important variable directly affecting the health of our rivers for nature and animals and the safety of our water for people and communities. Flow is critical to preserving the chemical, physical and biological integrity of our waters. According to the recent scientific reports from the USGS and EPA, the greatest threat to rivers is human alteration of the natural flow of our rivers.

The Alabama Rivers Alliance has been working with stakeholders across the state to develop a plan to protect the flows of our rivers and we want to urge Alabama’s decision makers to pledge to Let Rivers Flow.

We invite everyone – no matter age or paddling experience! – to join us on the Alabama River in Montgomery for a quick and exciting trip with community members and friends. We will celebrate the natural beauty while insisting our rivers are protected.
