This month’s volunteer workday will take place on Trail 203 in the Sipsey Wilderness. Trail maintenance will include clearing the trail of obstructions such as blown-down trees and cutting back encroaching vegetation.

Our crosscut sawyers will be needed!

If you are not a trained crosscut sawyer, there is a place for you on the trail brushing crew. Vegetation grows into the trail and we use loppers, pruners and hand saws to remove it.

All tools will be provided.

Be prepared for

  • hiking about 5 miles while carrying tools and performing trail maintenance
  • a few small stream crossings
  • heat
  • ticks

Bring

  • a backpack with lunch, snacks, water
  • work gloves
  • Epi Pen if needed for insect sting allergies

Wear clothing comfortable for summer hiking but protective against sharp tools and briars. Long pants and sturdy, closed-toe shoes or boots are recommended.

Protect yourself against ticks. We recommend the use of permethrin products, such as Permanone or Sawyers, the kind you spray on your clothes and allow to dry completely before you put them on. Ticks are thriving and numerous right now and protecting against diseases they carry is very important.

Dogs are not allowed on work projects.

If meeting the group at the trailhead works best, let us know when you sign up.

Wild South’s Helping Hands Volunteer Program is funded by the generous donations of individuals like you and by a matching grant from The National Forest Foundation.
