Great News! Seven Groups Successful in Updating To Great News! Seven Groups Successful in Updating Toxic Pollutant Values to Protect Health of Alabamians

We are thrilled that a Petition for Rulemaking was granted on Friday by the Alabama Environmental Management Commission (AEMC) after seven conservation organizations urged the state to update and publish amended toxicity values for twelve priority toxic pollutants, such as arsenic, cyanide, and more!

“We welcome the Environmental Management Commission’s decision to direct ADEM to finally update its outdated regulations,” Charles R. Miller, ARA's Policy Director, said. “It’s long past time for Alabama to align its water quality standards with current science and protect communities from these harmful toxic pollutants. We urge the Department to act swiftly and transparently in completing the rulemaking process.”

"Cindy Lowry, executive director of Alabama Rivers Alliance, said the water usage estimated for the development is staggering." - Inside Climate News

“Nobody’s looking cumulatively at what this will do to the entire watershed, the entire system, and we need that kind of level of decision-making and scrutiny before we should be considering a huge increase like that,” Lowry said. “It’s very shortsighted to consider this kind of increase. Economic development can’t just be about the perceived upside. We have to look at the negative impacts, too, and weigh those out.”

“This is something that is wholly unique on the planet—a species and an ecosystem that we can’t find anywhere else on Earth.” — Thomas Near, Yale University biologist

We had a great time representing Alabama's river m We had a great time representing Alabama's river movement at @scennetwork's Convening this weekend. Cindy spoke on a panel about collective resistance to challenges our communities are facing with our partners at @southernenvironment and @earthjustice. We left inspired by the powerful discussions around climate justice from folks around the region. It was awesome to see a strong showing of dedicated Alabamians in Miami to collaborate at this regional convening!
