Excited to have welcomed Alabama Water Rally to Montgomery—an incredible gathering focused on the future of our waterways and the communities they support. Hosting it at the EJI Hotel made it even more special, showcasing a space that reflects both history and forward momentum in our city.

I had the chance to sit on a panel alongside Commissioner Sankey and Mayor Carletta Davis of Pritchard. It sparked a real conversation around regional collaboration and what it takes to move our communities forward. This weekend highlighted the crossover between my work with the Alabama Scenic River Trail and representing Montgomery. Both are centered on creating opportunities and strengthening what makes our city unique.

Leaders from across the state came to Montgomery engaged and ready to collaborate, making for a big moment for our city.

Good News for Alabamians! SB 270 has passed and is Good News for Alabamians! SB 270 has passed and is on to the Governor’s desk! Sponsored by Senator Lance Bell and Representative Neil Rafferty, this bill requires data center developers to pay for certain costs related to electricity costs incurred by their projects. This is a good step forward to help ensure data centers pay their own way when it comes to utilities, and sets the table for more serious disclosures of data center impacts on water and power costs.

“We are pleased that the Alabama Legislature recognizes that citizens concerns about the impacts on electric utility rates from data centers are legitimate, and need to be addressed.

“This bill is a good first step to ensuring transparency around these projects, helping ensure that hard-working Alabamians aren’t subsidizing Silicon Valley.” - ARA’s Policy Director, Charles Miller @crmiv

Big news!

SB 270 has officially passed and is headed to Governor Kay Ivey’s desk, ensuring that data centers pay their own way, instead of shifting costs onto everyday Alabamians.

This is what responsible, consumer protection policy looks like.

Huge credit to Senator Lance Bell and Representative Neil Rafferty for their leadership, persistence, and commitment to getting this across the finish line before the 2026 session adjourns!

"For Earth Day 2026, join the Leagues of Women Voters of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Tennessee for our Good Trouble Tuesday virtual educational forum that focuses on the rapid growth of data centers across the Southeastern United States. This forum explores how these projects are affecting marginalized communities, the environment, and regional infrastructure. Participants will learn about the environmental footprint of data centers, including energy and water use, which can strain local resources and necessitate new utility and pipeline infrastructure. Discussion will also cover community impacts, such as changes in land use, potential effects on air and water quality, and how data center development intersects with local economic and health concerns."
