Happy Rivers of Alabama Day from ARA and our 100+ partners across the state! We hope you are able to take a moment today to celebrate our 132,000+ miles of rivers and streams by dipping a toe in a creek, toasting to our unmatched biodiversity, thanking a River Hero, casting a line, sharing your favorite memories on an Alabama river, or letting our elected officials know you want our drinking water protected from polluting industries!
Rivers of Alabama Day is celebrated throughout the state on the second Tuesday of April, as designated by the state legislature in 2007.
In 2024, the City of Montgomery became the first city to recognize Rivers of Alabama Day. The following year, in 2025, ARA was excited to work with our partners at Alabama Scenic River Trail as the City of Wetumpka and Montgomery County Commission also passed resolutions recognizing Rivers of Alabama Day.
This year, we are so proud to partner with Friends of the Locust Fork River and Blount County Tourism as the Blount County Commission designated Rivers of Alabama Day AND with Cahaba River Coalition as the City of Hoover also recognized this special day.
We are thrilled to see more and more municipalities recognize the importance of protecting our rivers and streams!
ABOUT RIVERS OF ALABAMA DAY
Supported by both houses of the legislature in 2007, the purpose of this day is to recognize the many valuable assets rivers bring to the State of Alabama. According to the resolution, Alabama’s rivers are a blessing to the state since they provide habitat to high-quality freshwater fish, mussel, snail, and crawfish species; supply the water essential to agriculture and and industry; and support the state’s multimillion-dollar tourism industry.
If you want your city, town, or county to recognize Rivers of Alabama Day next year, please let us know. We have sample resolutions and other tools to help you make it happen!
