Over the past year, Alabama Rivers Alliance, along with regional and national partners at Environmental Policy Innovation Center (EPIC) and Harpeth Conservancy, has been investigating efforts to get lead OUT of our drinking water in the southeast. This resulted in a comprehensive report that has good news for Alabama — we’re ahead of many other states when it comes to removing toxic lead from our drinking water systems!
Unfortunately, a resolution was introduced in Congress today by Representative Gary Palmer to do away with a law that requires utilities to get lead out of drinking water by 2027. Repealing the Lead & Copper Rule Improvements would halt the replacement lead pipes across the country, meaning that millions of Americans and more than 100,000 Alabamians will continue to be exposed to toxic lead in their drinking water.
