
Dr. Scot Duncan
Alabama Audubon
Scot Duncan is the Executive Director of Alabama Audubon, a not-for-profit dedicated to bird conservation and outreach. He was a professor of biology at Birmingham-Southern College for 20 years, served as Department Chair for three years, and retired at the rank of full professor in 2022.
Scot holds a BS in Biology from Eckerd College, and a MS and PhD in Zoology from the University of Florida. His research and explorations have taken him to Antarctica, New Zealand, Uganda, Central and South America, the Pacific Northwest, and ecosystems across the southeastern US.
Scot is the author of award-winning Southern Wonder: Alabama’s Surprising Biodiversity, with foreword written by Dr. Edward O. Wilson. The book won several awards, including the Phil Reed Environmental Writing Award from the Southern Environmental Law Center. Scot’s latest book is Southern Rivers: Restoring America’s Freshwater Biodiversity published in March 2024 by the University of Alabama Press. The book was chosen by the Center for the Book as the adult non-fiction “Great Read” book for 2024 from Alabama and represented Alabama at the National Book Fair at the Library of Congress summer 2024.
Scot is a lifelong birder, and advocate for conservation.
