Several of our staff have been in Grand Rapids this week for @river_network’s River Rally, learning so much and meeting great folks who #DefendRivers all over the country. This afternoon we skipped over to check out Grand Rapids’ fish ladder project created in 1975 to help the steelhead trout, salmon, chinook, and more pass several low-head dams on the Grand River. It was exciting to see a fish passage project in action! We are anxiously awaiting the implementation of the fish passage project on the Alabama River! @nature_alabama

We had the best day today in Bibb County hearing what the great folks at the @univwestalabama are creating at the UWA Cahaba Biodiversity Center. We saw special and rare native plants like the Alabama Croton and dwarf horse nettle, and stumbled upon a maclurite, and descended into a cave, and explored alongside the Cahaba. We were also serenaded by the thousands of cicadas emerging from the ground! We can’t wait to return here this summer as we explore Alabama’s diversity of native plants as part of the 2024 #SouthernExposure films!

Focusing on research activities for faculty and students (undergraduate and graduate), the Center embodies and materializes the University’s vision for a fully-immersed conservation biology program. Multi-discipline projects emphasizing botanical and zoological biodiversity, ecology, archaeology, water quality, and conservation land management, as well as many others, are now possible.

We had awesome discussions yesterday at the Scholars Strategy Network meeting at @montevallo where ARA and some of our partners met with academics about research opportunities in Alabama to help #DefendRivers. We also discussed building relationships with legislators, following bills, engaging students with our work and more! Thank you to @susancaplow for making these great conversations happen and for all her dedication to Alabama's environment and beyond! @umenvironmentalstudies

We are thrilled to be a part of @workingfilms Rura

We are thrilled to be a part of @workingfilms Rural Cinema program this year, advancing ARA’s mission of collaborating with incredible partners like @coosariverkeeper to protect clean water for people and nature. As a largely rural state, it is important that we not overlook the struggles and triumphs of the people who make up the rural communities across the Coosa River basin, and our state as a whole. We look forward to bringing communities together — over film and conversation — to learn, discuss, celebrate and be inspired! Stay tuned for when we will be in a town near you!

Film screenings are a powerful tool to engage and mobilize communities locally, which is why @WorkingFilms is thrilled to announce the our 2024 Rural Cinema cohort:

About Rural Cinema:
Rural Cinema will support individuals and organizations in launching a community film series focused on environmental justice for 1 year, providing participants with training, technical support, funding for hard costs & $16,000 of solar-powered screening equipment.

We are so excited to see this project come to frui

We are so excited to see this project come to fruition after participating in initial conversations 3+ years ago! ARA is so encouraged and thrilled to see U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (@usfws ) is removing the inoperable Elba Hydroelectric Dam! This huge project not only will open up habitat for the Gulf sturgeon and other migratory species but it also creates local jobs, and reduces flooding risks for the community. A win-win-win!

We look forward to continued partnerships with federal and state agencies to remove dangerous or obsolete #dams that no longer serve their intended purposes. Learn more about this project from the link in bio.

Last summer, we were excited to grow the #Southern

Last summer, we were excited to grow the #SouthernExposure film fellowship program to include our first Film and Poet Fellow, @palaviahuja! She hosted a poetry writing workshop in the Sipsey Wilderness and we were honored to have Alabama’s poet laureate, @cityofawoman, join us at this truly special event. The poem Ashley M Jones created that day has been published! Take a moment to check it out today, as we close out National Poetry Month.
