Strengthening Democracy
Fair and equal public participation in government is a key ingredient of a strong democracy. In the United States, we have placed the power of protecting our water, air and lands in the hands of elected officials who make the laws and government agencies who implement and enforce them. It is no accident that the creators of the Clean Water Act included a provision for citizens to file lawsuits against those violating the law. When the government is not adequately doing its job, the people can and should stand up, speak out and take action.
This is why the Alabama Rivers Alliance places importance on protecting the things, such as voting rights and voter education, that keep our democracy functioning and that empower people to be informed participants of decisions that are made by our government.
Our work in this area includes:
- Active participation in Alabama’s 501(c)(3) civic engagement table, Alabama Forward
- Partnerships with groups working to protect voting rights and ensure all Alabamians are registered and informed voters, such as the League of Women Voters of Alabama, Alabama Arise, Black Voters Matter,Transform Alabama, ACLU of Alabama,Southern Poverty Law Center, and the NAACP of Alabama
- Providing educational opportunities for our members and partners about voting rights issues and efforts to disenfranchise voters through our Water is Life Zoom Talk series and speakers at Alabama Water Rally
