Drinking Water and Wastewater

Current Status: ARA collaborates with national partners to advocate for federal funding and policies, facilitates Alabama’s Water Infrastructure Advocacy Coalition striving to improve the policies funding water infrastructure in Alabama, advocates for communities suffering from water injustices, and promotes awareness of water infrastructure funding sources.

ARA’s Wastewater Equity Fellowship recently launched an educational resource website with information about water infrastructure and it’s funded in Alabama. Visit the ALWaterHub.org to learn more and check your community’s funding status.

ARA stays engaged with Alabama’s State Revolving Fund process by submitting public comments and offering policy guidance to improve the equitable and efficient usage of SRF funds. Please reach out to ARA if you feel your community was unjustly denied access to water infrastructure funding.

Drinking water and wastewater treatment infrastructure improvements are key to healthy communities and waterways. Advocating for water infrastructure improvements in your community can be a long term strategy for resolving chronic water quality issues.

Historic amounts of funding available from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL/IIJA) and American Rescue Plan (ARPA) mean now is the time to act and pursue water infrastructure updates. The majority of these funds are being distributed through the Alabama Department of Environmental Management’s State Revolving Fund that provides loan assistance for communities to fund infrastructure projects. You can check on this ADEM website to see if your community has applied for funding and the status of project applications.
