Civic Engagement

At the heart of any kind of advocacy movement or campaign is the need to engage with decision-makers, which in Alabama means engaging with local, state or federal government officials.

Decision-makers often are the ones who have the power to make the change we are seeking. Whether that is for stronger environmental protections or proactive planning and policy-making to better protect our community’s access to clean water. The most effective forms of civic engagement come from informing ourselves about the issues we are facing, then collectively organizing with as many partners as possible to strategically engage with our government agencies and elected officials. The Alabama Rivers Alliance encourages and leads civic engagement around water issues in Alabama by providing opportunities for community members and partners to come together to collectively learn and strategize and by providing information to the public about complex and often overlooked environmental problems.
