ARA was honored to help bring together leaders fro ARA was honored to help bring together leaders from Alabama, Florida, and Louisiana for The League of Women Voters Gulf Coast Convening this weekend to discuss climate, resilience and affordability. Cindy moderated an expert panel featuring @mobilebaykeeper, @thejusticecouncil, and Rebuild Bay County. We were also super proud to sponsor Carletta Davis of We Matter Eight Mile Community Association as the keynote speaker—and we loved that we were able to screen the #SouthernExposure Film FORCES OF NATURE before her incredibly powerful message.

We had a record-breaking crowd of 130+ last night We had a record-breaking crowd of 130+ last night in Mobile Bay for the screening of the new #SouthernExposure Films! Thank you to @sierraclubal for hosting us once again at the @5riversdelta center to share these films with an incredible community of people who live downstream from nearly all Alabama's rivers and streams. They understand better than anyone the need to defend our rivers! Thank you to We Matter Eight Mile Community Association and @mobilebaykeeper for being a part of the great discussion after the films! Alabama Rivers Alliance staff and our lobbyist - along with other environmental partners and our awesome inaugural ALSTARs class - will be following all the bills and talking with legislators throughout the next few months to keep you up to date on the good, the bad and the ugly as it relates to our work defending and protecting Alabama's 132,000 miles of rivers and streams. HOW CAN YOU STAY ENGAGED AND HELP DURING THE SESSION? * Stay tuned in to your emails and social media posts from ARA -- and respond to our action alerts as you see them. There is incredible strength in numbers, and our elected officials must hear from you! * If you already know your legislator, let us know and we can give you talking points about bills we plan to introduce and ones we are monitoring. * Help us follow the action. If you see any concerning news articles or hear of any bills that you think might impact water or the environment, please email ARA's Policy Director, Charles Miller. Join ARA, @sierraclubal's Mobile Bay Group, @mobilebaykeeper, We Matter Eight Mile Community's Carletta Davis and more for the NEW #SouthernExposure Films at @5riversdelta in Spanish Fort. Created in six weeks during the summer, the 2024 Southern Exposure films celebrate special people and places in Alabama while exploring complex issues and solutions. In Saving Seagrass: Alabama’s Critical Underwater Nursery, we dive underwater to discover a “whole ‘nother living world under there in the seagrass that nobody ever sees”, full of critters and life and we learn what must happen to protect this Submerged Aquatic Vegetation vital to the health of Mobile Bay and the communities and industries that rely on it. In The Cost of Forever, we uncover the hidden and costly dangers of ‘forever chemicals’ in our rivers and drinking water sources, following Riverkeepers and water protectors as they strive to protect communities—and themselves—from PFAS contamination. In Alabama Roots, we travel across Alabama rediscovering our native plants, meeting passionate plant people along the way who are making changes big and small in hopes of preserving the last vestiges of once vast ecosystems and Alabama’s unprecedented botanical biodiversity. In Forces of Nature, we meet and celebrate three Alabama women who, out of necessity to protect the people and places they love, answered the call to advocate for their water, land and communities. Philoptary, from our Poet / Film Fellow, Jermaine Thompson @batesthompson, features a captivating poem created this summer. Images from past filmmakers and from Jermaine’s own experience at Ruffner Mountain in Birmingham accompany the words. Martha was at @asanonline's Food & Farm Forum talking with farmers about how to make sure they have clean water for their farms. Our board member Alyssa was at the City of Montgomery's Lunar New Year Cultural Festival listening to the community talk about access to the mighty Alabama River, as well as let folks know about our new job opening in the area! Kelly was at the Salamander Festival in Homewood with Friends of Shades Creek, Cahaba River Society, Cahaba Riverkeeper, Alabama Environmental Council, Freshwater Land Trust and more to make sure Southern Exposure Films has great footage of this super well attended and much beloved event! #DefendRivers #WaterIsLife #AlabamaRivers #Montgomery #Huntsville #Birmingham #Homewood #Mobile #alabamalife

Cindy’s commitment to protecting and defending all of Alabama’s 132,000 miles of rivers and streams is unmatched. Her keen ability to lead with kindness, true collaboration, and an unassuming brilliance has inspired all of us who work with her. A true visionary, Cindy has shaped Alabama’s river protection movement into a powerful and united force for good. You may need to lean in to hear her, but her words hold the kind of wisdom that can move mountains and inspire change. Thank you, Cindy, for 20 years of thoughtful, impactful leadership and for inspiring us every day to work toward an Alabama with free-flowing, healthy rivers that support thriving critters and healthy communities.
