Cahaba Group Sierra Club monthly meeting: “Historic Birmingham Mineral Railroad — Past and Present” with James Lowery
Thursday, Oct. 11 at 6:30 at the Southern Environmental Center at Birmingham Southern College. 900 Arkadelphia Rd, Birmingham 35254
People drive, walk, and bicycle every day in areas where the historic Birmingham Mineral Railroad (BMRR) ran throughout the Birmingham and surrounding areas without ever being aware that the BMRR was located in those places. Birmingham’s iron industry history is an important part of its overall history, and the BMRR was a significant part of that iron industry history.
This presentation by James Lowery will describe the Birmingham Mineral Railroad (BMRR), show maps and photographs from its steam engine era, describe where it ran in the Birmingham area and where the former roadbed can still be seen, and describe the BMRR Signs Project that is installing historic signs showing where the BMRR was located.
DIRECTIONS:
Address for Birmingham Southern College: 900 Arkadelphia Road, Birmingham, Al 35254. When arriving, inform the guard at the BSC entrance that you are there for a meeting at the SEC; they will also be happy to give directions. To find the Southern Environmental Center, take the first left immediately after the guard shack, go straight through the median stop sign and turn left at the T-intersection stop. The SEC is the building on the left at that stop, there is a marquee above the entrance that says “Southern Environmental Center”. There is parking in front of it and further down. A map of the campus can be found here (SEC is labeled #1): https://www.bsc.edu/about/map.html
