“Descendant” screening with Sierra Club of Alabama
March 19 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pmFree
Join Sierra Club for a free screening of Descendant, an educational film about the descendants of the survivors of the Clotilda, the last known ship to carry enslaved Africans to the Americas. The film centers on Africatown, a community in Mobile, where Clotilda survivors and their families bought land and built a life. Descendant explores the historical legacy of slavery here in Alabama, and how the impact of environmental harm continues to disproportionately fall on people of color.
Sierra Club Alabama is hosting a screening of Descendant at the Carver Theater on Sunday, March 19. We’ll start the day at 1:00pm with appetizers, refreshments, and live jazz by Daniel Jose Carr. The film begins at 2:00pm, and will be followed by an incredible panel discussion, including folks featured in the film as well as direct descendants of survivors of the Clotilda.
