On May 1, the Army Corps of Engineers released their feasibility report and integrated environmental assessment (IES) of the Claiborne and Millers Ferry Locks and Dams Fish Passage Study for public review and comment. Years of work by scientists and conservation groups have led to this important step toward ecologically reconnecting the Cahaba River to the Gulf of Mexico. These dams have prevented migratory fish from accessing their historic spawning grounds since they were built in the 70s. This study identifies a way that fish passage could be restored on the lower Alabama River, potentially allowing us to see sturgeon runs up the Cahaba River in our lifetime! The Alabama Rivers Alliance and partners will be in attendance at these meetings and will be drafting comments. We encourage you to attend these meetings if you can to learn more about this important effort and what you can do to help make it happen.

The upcoming public meetings are from 6-8 pm on the following dates:

May 16 – Birmingham Botanical Gardens (2612 Lane Park Rd, Birmingham, AL 35223)

May 17 – Camden Wilcox Female Institute building (301 Broad St. Camden, AL 36726)

May 18 – Monroeville Shop at 66 (Monroeville, AL 36460)
