Mark your calendar on Saturday Dec 10th 5 pm to 9 pm for a Star Party. The Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is hosting an amazing night of free family fun with cookies, hot chocolate, a screech owl walk on their Savanna Trail boardwalk plus a hayride from the Coastal Resources Center to the Bayou Heron boat launch to view the annual Geminids Meteor Shower.

The free family-oriented event misses the peak (Dec 14/15) with a waxing gibbous moon (Last Quarter on Dec 17) but this coastal viewing spot provides a dark Southwestern sky. The conservation area (other than the Coastal Resources Interpretive Center) has full time public access, so intrepid stargazers are free to choose another night, or plan a daytime visit to explore this important ecosystem on various short trails scattered throughout the Grand Bay Savanna Complex.
The NERR is located on the Mississippi-Alabama state line in Jackson County, MS, about 30 miles southwest of Mobile, co-located with the USFWS Grand Bay National Wildlife Refuge and Grand Bay Coastal Preserve. If anyone needs directions or wants to arrange a carpool, contact Neil Milligan (
