FreeWater is Life: Magnificent Mussels with Dr. Paul Johnson (Alabama Aquatic Biodiversity Center) and Dr. Randy Haddock (Newly Retired from Cahaba River Society!)
Alabama ranks #1 in the entire United States for the amount of different species of freshwater mussels, including many species found only in Alabama. These amazing creatures act as nature’s water filters and they work hard to keep our rivers and streams clean. Join us Tuesday as we learn more about Alabama’s freshwater mussels and how we must protect them before it is too late. We’ll also hear about the largest U.S. non-game recovery program for mussels of its kind – right here in Alabama!

Each Tuesday, starting on Rivers of Alabama Day (April 14), we invite you to join us from noon – 1 pm for this virtual get-together…with a purpose! We will be highlighting the role that water plays in our lives throughout Alabama and we will share how you can participate in the efforts to protect water, even in this new “normal”. You’ll hear from our partners across the state, and leading experts in water protection. We’ll even have a few river history lessons thrown in!
