🎉GREAT NEWS! HB 434, a bill naming the Alabama Shad as the Official State Migratory Fish, has passed out of committee unanimously! Thank you to Representative Mike Shaw (R-47) for introducing this bill. Stay tuned for next steps when we will need your help to ensure its passage. (get it!?)

This inspiring evening of film + discussion is an opportunity to catch up with what’s happening with ARA and our partners across Alabama and how you can help.

Created in six weeks during the summer, the 2023 Southern Exposure films celebrate special people and places in Alabama while exploring complex issues and solutions. In this collection, we’ll explore the Sipsey Wilderness through the eyes of a “city girl” and see why our special places need to be protected for all Alabamians. We’ll learn about real wastewater solutions being implemented in the Black Belt, bringing justice to areas that have long been overlooked and underserved for these basic needs. We will meet three Indigenous people who have felt the call to protect their land, and we will hold ADEM’s feet to the proverbial fire as we question why a landfill was left essentially unregulated for years, resulting in the Moody Landfill Fire that raged for months. Finally, we will see just how precious the mussel is to our ecosystem, while learning about a project that would culminate in the most ecologically significant river reconnection project in the history of the United States, right here in Alabama.

We are SO thrilled that the City of Montgomery (@cityofmontgomery) has designated the second Tuesday in April as Rivers of Alabama Day, in symphony with the State Legislature’s designation in 2007! Cindy was invited to accept the proclamation from the FIRST city to make such a designation. We can't wait for other cities and towns across Alabama to follow their lead. Special thank you to the City of Montgomery, Councilor Andrew Szymanski (@aszymanski5), and Mayor Steven L. Reed (@stevenlouisreed) for this special proclamation!

Howdy, Young Professionals of Tuscaloosa! Looking for a fun Saturday afternoon and to get involved with environmentalism in Alabama? Join ARA's Young Professional River Defenders on April 13 for a hike and social afterwards in Tuscaloosa!

3:00 pm - Gather at Hurricane Creek Park for a guided hike and presentation from YOUR Hurricane Creekkeeper -- the legendary John Wathen! We'll listen to John speak about his efforts to preserve Hurricane Creek and hit the trail after for an easy hike.
*Meet us at 7005 Old Birmingham Hwy, Tuscaloosa, AL 35404.*

5:30 pm - After the hike, we'll head to Loosa Brews for a laid-back social! Enjoy craft beer and great conversations with fellow young professionals who share your passion for environmental stewardship and community engagement. Plus, we've got pizza coming around 6 pm - because why not treat ourselves after a day of adventure?

Come out to both events - or just one! - for a great time and to learn more about the Alabama Rivers Alliance and the Young Professional River Defenders! The hike is weather-dependent, but we'll gather for a social at Loosa Brews rain or shine. We can't wait to hang out in Tuscaloosa and hope you'll join us!
