We are so excited to see this project come to frui

We are so excited to see this project come to fruition after participating in initial conversations 3+ years ago! ARA is so encouraged and thrilled to see U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (@usfws ) is removing the inoperable Elba Hydroelectric Dam! This huge project not only will open up habitat for the Gulf sturgeon and other migratory species but it also creates local jobs, and reduces flooding risks for the community. A win-win-win!

We look forward to continued partnerships with federal and state agencies to remove dangerous or obsolete #dams that no longer serve their intended purposes. Learn more about this project from the link in bio.

Last summer, we were excited to grow the #Southern

Last summer, we were excited to grow the #SouthernExposure film fellowship program to include our first Film and Poet Fellow, @palaviahuja! She hosted a poetry writing workshop in the Sipsey Wilderness and we were honored to have Alabama’s poet laureate, @cityofawoman, join us at this truly special event. The poem Ashley M Jones created that day has been published! Take a moment to check it out today, as we close out National Poetry Month. Our Young Professional River Defenders had an awesome time with Hurricane Creekkeeper John Wathen (@creekkeeper) last weekend hiking and exploring Hurricane Creek on the Black Warrior River. Our YPRD is such an important part of the ARA Team. From leading sessions and workshops at Water Rally, to talking to their legislators about our priority issues, to advising us on ways to engage the next generations, we could not #DefendRivers in Alabama without them!

Created in six weeks during the summer, the 2023 Southern Exposure films celebrate special people and places in Alabama while exploring complex issues and solutions. In this collection, we’ll explore the Sipsey Wilderness through the eyes of a “city girl” and see why our special places need to be protected for all Alabamians. We’ll learn about real wastewater solutions being implemented in the Black Belt, bringing justice to areas that have long been overlooked and underserved for these basic needs. We will meet three Indigenous people who have felt the call to protect their land, and we will hold ADEM’s feet to the proverbial fire as we question why a landfill was left essentially unregulated for years, resulting in the Moody Landfill Fire that raged for months. Finally, we will see just how precious the mussel is to our ecosystem, while learning about a project that would culminate in the most ecologically significant river reconnection project in the history of the United States, right here in Alabama.
