ALABAMA RIVERS ALLIANCE RECOGNIZES COMMUNITY LEADERS AND RIVER HEROES AT THE ANNUAL RIVER CELEBRATION AWARDS DURING ALABAMA WATER RALLY
BIRMINGHAM – The Alabama Rivers Alliance recognized inspiring and tirelessly dedicated community and state leaders who are making a difference in protecting Alabama’s 132,000 miles of rivers and streams at the local level and beyond at the 26th annual Alabama Water Rally this past weekend at Camp McDowell.
The River Celebration Awards recognize and celebrate notable organizations and individuals who have made outstanding contributions toward protecting clean water and healthy rivers in their community.
“Much of the work of these individuals and organizations goes largely unrecognized except in our own circles,” Cindy Lowry, executive director of Alabama Rivers Alliance, said. “We cherish the opportunity to honor their work and dedication with our River Celebration Awards and are proud to work alongside them defending our rivers – and the people who rely on them – throughout Alabama.”
The honorees of the 2024 River Celebration Awards are:
Group of the Year – Save Chandler Mountain, for their incredible accomplishment coming together to stop the ill-conceived hydro pump storage project on Chandler Mountain
Emerging Leader of the Year – Ankur Shah, for his inspiring leadership on ARA’s Young Professionals Board and Huntsville Environmental Coalition
Volunteers of the Year – Kelsey Herndon and Rebekke Muench, for creating the Water is Life Community Conversations with legislators across Alabama for ARA and our partners
In addition to these awards, three extraordinary individuals were also recognized with the highest achievement award of RIVER HERO. This ultimate recognition is given to passionate individuals who have dedicated years of their lives to Alabama’s river movement and have had a profound impact through their hard work and leadership. They go above and beyond to protect our rivers, the health of our communities, and our environment.
The 2024 RIVER HEROES are:
Carol Adams-Davis (Sierra Club Mobile Bay)
Henry Hughes (Friends of Shades Creek)
Dr. Myra Crawford (Cahaba Riverkeeper)
