Rivers of Alabama Day is the second Tuesday of April, as designated by the Alabama legislature in 2007. Alabama Rivers Alliance hosts our annual Lobby Day on this day because talking to our elected officials is a critically important way to #DefendRivers!

ARA staff and our partners at Conservation Alabama and Coosa Riverkeeper have been preparing for this session for months and we now have a bill! We are excited for you to talk to your legislators about SB 105, the Safe & Healthy Outdoor Recreation Act (the SHOR Act). Read about this bill –  with bipartisan support – by clicking here.

Lobby Day is our chance to meet legislators at the State House and advocate for safe and healthy rivers and affordable, equitable, and resilient drinking water and wastewater infrastructure for all Alabamians. This year’s focus will be the SHOR Act (SB 105)!

Join ARA and our partners in Montgomery Tuesday, April 11 to tell your elected officials why you want them to prioritize protecting our water. We will make it easy — and fun — for you to talk with your representatives about the SHOR Act and other issues impacting our waterways!

WHAT TO EXPECT AT LOBBY DAY

11 am – Meet in Montgomery at the Capitol Steps for a Welcome and Press Conference to announce the SHOR Act. Click here to read more about this bill.
12:30 – 1:30 pm – Lunch and learn for a briefing on bills and priority issues and get tips on how to talk with your elected official (hint: just like you would talk to anyone else about important issues!)
1:30 – 3 pm – Lobby with Legislators!
3 pm – Gather for debriefing and feedback
3:15 pm – Head home knowing you did something important to #DefendRivers!

WHY SHOULD YOU REGISTER?

  • We need to know how many lunches to order!

  • We need to know who your legislators are before we lobby to them so we can properly prepare!

  • We need your voice to pass this bill!

HERE’S AN IDEA: Does your company or workplace encourage you to take a community service day? Lobby Day is an incredibly effective way to use that day!

ABOUT RIVERS OF ALABAMA DAY

Alabama has more than 132,000 miles of rivers and streams, and there is a special day dedicated to celebrating them. Rivers of Alabama Day is the second Tuesday in April. In addition to celebrating Alabama’s waterways on this day, the Alabama Rivers Alliance encourages all Alabama citizens to celebrate the vital network of grassroots groups that fight to protect them.

Rivers of Alabama Day was established in 2007 when the Alabama State Legislature passed a resolution establishing the second Tuesday in April as Rivers of Alabama Day.

Supported by both houses of the legislature, the purpose of this day is to recognize the many valuable assets rivers bring to the State of Alabama. According to the resolution, Alabama’s rivers are a blessing to the state since they provide habitat to high quality freshwater fish, mussel, snail, and crawfish species; supply the water essential to agriculture and industry; and support the state’s multimillion dollar tourism industry.
