For years, advocates have been sounding alarm bells about the dangers of coal ash sitting in groundwater in unlined pits alongside our rivers and even threatening our drinking water sources. The Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) created a dangerous plan to permanently store toxic coal ash in these unlined pits – violating federal standards. Thankfully, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is not stepping back. They have proposed denying ADEM’s coal ash program in order to uphold protective federal standards and will be hosting two public hearings to hear from communities. This is a landmark moment and the first proposed denial of an inadequate state coal ash permit program. It’s our chance to stand up for our waterways, our health, and our communities.

Virtual and in-person commenters from Alabama and beyond are essential. We need to demonstrate broad and deep public support for EPA’s denial of Alabama’s dangerous state program. EPA’s decision has implications for communities nationwide. Join us virtually as Water is Life returns with ARA, Black Warrior Riverkeeper, Mobile Baykeeper and Sierra Club on Tuesday, September 12. We’ll discuss this important opportunity in the fight to move coal ash away from our waterways!  Click here to register.
