GOOD NEWS! Alabama Rivers Alliance, SELC, and memb GOOD NEWS! Alabama Rivers Alliance, SELC, and members and partners across Birmingham spoke at today's Birmingham City Council meeting urging the council to consider a suspension of data center development. This six month suspension gives the City's planning and permitting department a chance to establish common sense regulations for data centers that will protect Birmingham residents and business owners. We were relieved to hear all the right questions being considered today, and that the Council is considering the stark differences between various types of data centers as they assess how to balance all the needs of the Birmingham community. We look forward to hearing more from them!

The 2026 Alabama legislative session kicked off to The 2026 Alabama legislative session kicked off today! It’s the final year before our legislators head into reelection mode. That means they will try to move fast and not make any waves so they can start campaigning since Alabama law bars campaigning during session. ARA staff and our partners are in Montgomery each week and are actively tracking any and all bills that affect clean water and a healthy community. We’re ready to engage our dedicated members all over the state and will let you know when to take action. Follow us wherever you see us, or visit our website, to stay up to date on key legislation and other ways to be active and have your voice heard this session!

BIRMINGHAM RESIDENTS, TAKE ACTION! After the high BIRMINGHAM RESIDENTS, TAKE ACTION!

After the highly controversial and widely opposed “Project Marvel” proposed data center rezoning in Bessemer, the City of Birmingham is considering a 270-day moratorium on all data center related activities. This pause on data center-related permitting, rezoning, and approval would give Birmingham time to develop a thoughtful approach to these resource-intensive projects - one that considers the needs and wants of Birmingham residents.

Tell Birmingham City Council to vote YES on this moratorium!

BONUS! Birmingham City Council will be holding a public hearing during their regularly scheduled City Council meeting on Tuesday, January 13 at 9:30 am at Birmingham City Hall. Join us and WEAR RED to show your support for this moratorium.

We can't wait to see you THIS SATURDAY in Decatur We can't wait to see you THIS SATURDAY in Decatur at the Festival of Cranes with our friends at Wild Alabama!

THIS Saturday, January 10, from 2:30 – 3:30 pm at the Alabama Center for the Arts Recital Hall in Decatur, Alabama

In the 2025 collection, we meet Alabama’s salamanders like you’ve never seen them before, and we fall for their undeniable charm. We wind through the Tallapoosa River, where our country's veterans find healing, community, and the joy of casting a line for red eye bass. We confront the environmental impacts and costs of artificial intelligence as massive data centers pop up across the Southeast, threatening to drain communities of precious water and energy. We are invited in to witness a small town’s fight to protect its peace and health from the relentless blasts of a quarry next door. And we take a breath with a reflective poetry film that grounds us in family, community, and the simple, nourishing act of being in nature.

Check out the latest from @thebamabuzz "2026 Eco-f Check out the latest from @thebamabuzz "2026 Eco-friendly resolutions: Water conservation in Alabama". The article dives into the need for an Alabama Water Plan, how you can personally conserve water in times of drought, and so much more. There's even a nudge for you to come to Water Rally! : )

"Cindy Lowry and the Alabama Rivers Alliance believe all Alabamians who care about water resources should resolve in 2026 to advocate for the Water Plan. In addition to actions you can take individually, [ARA and other conservation groups] have campaigned for an Alabama Water Plan.

“As a whole, you’re talking about a state that doesn’t oversee water resources in a way that manages to balance it out between uses. When times are dry, we don’t have a water plan to help industries and water systems that are hurting.”

Learn about the plan on the Alabama Rivers Alliance website. Even better, attend this upcoming year’s 2026 Water Rally in Montgomery from March 20-22."
